Dr Wafa Sultan: Muslim Critic of Violence

From Saturday’s New York Times…in an interview on Al Jazeera Dr Wafa Sultan a Syrian-American psychiatrist living near LA had this to say:

“We have not seen a single Jew blow himself up in a German restaurant. We have not seen a single Jew destroy a church….Only Muslims defend their beliefs by burning down churches, killing people and destroying embassies. This path will not yield any results. Muslims must ask themselves what they can do for humankind, before they demand that humankind respect them.

…The clash we are witnessing around the world is not a clash of religions…it is between two eras. It is a clash between the MIddle Ages and another mentality that belongs to the 21st century. It is a clash between civilization and backwardness, between the civilized and the primitive, between barbarity and rationality.”

Pretty electric stuff.

Sultan was a medical student in 1979 when members of the radical Muslim Brotherhood burst into her classroom and killed her professor as she watched. “They shot hundreds of bullets into him shouting ‘God is great!'” she said. “At that point I lost my trust in their god and began to question all our teachings….I had to look for another god.”

  1. It’s true– the mentality of blowing yourself up simply to inflict pain on innocents is just crazy.I can understand the problem to some extent– with no real power or voice, the typical Iraqi, Palestinian, etc., must feel helpless. But suicide bombings and death threats against infidels is not the way to go about making change.

  2. Stuart, that was a fantastic quote from Dr. Sultan. Excellent stuff. Too bad noone that matters is listening. She is just a heretic to them. True Islam demands the blood of infidels, they would reply. But she is correct that it is a clash of eras and not of religions. Great imagery.Ronan, I guess you’re right. Bush really is just a terrorist.

  3. John,I do make a moral equivalence between terrorists and Our Leaders, but I suspect that difference was largely lost on the many thousands that we killed through Shock and Awe. But it’s OK because Jesus sanctioned it.

  4. Ronan,Can you show me an actual instance of Bush, Cheney or Wolfowitz saying that “God is on our side”? No. America’s path to war was never justified with religious rhetoric (although I could hypothesize that to someone who believes in a God for whom the supreme law are the laws of agency and human liberty–know anyone that believes that?–a quasi-religious argument COULD be made from such a position that such a God would approve the overthrow of a soul-strangling liberty-devouring tyrant like Saddam Hussein). And does someone as clever as you are not actually see the difference between taking military action against the infrastructure of a rogue state (that is arbitrarily murdering 60,000 of it’s own citizens a year by Human Rights Watch count) and in the process tragically being unable to avoid civilian casualities and a dogma that enables direct action against civilians? Against women and children on buses and old men celebrating a holy day?Come on RJH, spare his the ridiculousness.

  5. Amazing. You have to < HREF="http://www.memritv.org/search.asp?ACT=S9&P1=1050#" REL="nofollow">actually watch this woman<> make her case. It is remarkable.

  6. One problem: she is not Muslim. She is a secular humanist who doesn’t believe in the supernatural.Give me a sunni imam that says the same things she does in this segment and I will be happy.

  7. Thanks for the video, John.I agree with Wafa Sultan. Muslims have to find a better place in the world for themselves. As late as 1693, the Ottoman empire besieged Vienna. Since then Western Europeans have benefitted not only from world trade shifting from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic but also from the emergence of the secular nation state that liberated science from religion. Without a secular state that has the capacity to protect intellectuals from religion and majority sentiment, there will be no progress for Muslims or anyone else.Sometimes it feels like that certain Americans do their best to undermine the secular state that is the foundation of western civilization, wealth, and freedom.
